On July 22, 2008: Vote NO OVERRIDE! On Proposition 2 ½!Remember: an override is permanent A Permanent removal of our tax cap is not fiscally responsible. - Overriding 2 ½ means no limits on tax increases every year from now on!
This would make Rehoboth unaffordable to all but the very rich
- Overriding 2 ½ Is NOT NECESSARY!
We Don’t Need To Override to Balance Our Budget! We have alternative smart solutions, already being worked out.
- The Selectmen have directed the school committee to re-bid the high school septic system and anticipate the cost to drop to approx. $700,000; less than HALF of the previous bid! The initial bid was exorbitant because only a D-CAM contractor was considered, making most local contractors ineligible. This is not only unnecessary, but does not guarantee competent work, only higher costs
- A subsequent look at the school budget has located nearly $250,000 in a ‘rainy day’ account, which can reduce the amount needed by the schools. In addition, reorganization of teaching positions between Palmer River and Beckwith Middle school would alleviate the necessity of adding so many new positions. The current budget of $33 million is enough to properly educate our children, provided it is managed fairly and responsibly.
- Given the dire economic situation in this country and the difficulties our families are already having making ends meet, raising our tax burden is irresponsible. Let’s revisit the budget and get it in line with the finance committee’s recommendations instead of throwing away the one protection we have against fiscally irresponsible spending.
